Framing Lumber

    fresh studs in the yard

Douglas Fir or "Doug Fir" is the preferred framing lumber in northwest Connecticut because of its strength, dimensional stability and its cutting and nailing properties. We strive to stock high quality lumber and to do this, we communicate our needs to our suppliers and maintain a strong relationship with them. Our main suppliers are Mid-State Lumber and Sherwood Lumber.

For more information about the properties and harvesting of this great wood, check out the Western Wood Products Association page on Douglas Fir.

Plywood

Our construction plywood is made from Douglas Fir veneers. Our customers prefer Doug Fir because of its strength, stability and weather resistance. We stock CDX sheathing and underlayment grades.

For cabinet or finished plywoods, we stock a wide variety of softwoods, sanded one or two sides; pine veneers; and hardwood veneers in lauan, birch and oak.

For more information on plywoods, visit the web sites of the American Plywood Association and the Canadian Plywood Association.

Pressure Treated Lumber

CCA Pressure Treated lumber has become the standard for use where rot and insect resistance is required. Our treated decking is Premium Grade with "WeatherSeal" treatment. Our 2 x 4 through 2 x 12 is all #1 grade and our timbers are #2 grade. We stock the following dimensions:

We are pleased with this relationship not only because of the quality of lumber that Potomac supplies, but also because of their environmental awareness in their treating operations.

Quality Siding

Our cedar bevel siding, known in New England as "clapboard" is all clear vertical grain "CVG." Vertical grain is superior to flat grain in that it is less likely to split, curl or warp and it holds paint better. We stock CVG clapboards in ½ x 6, ½ x 8 and ¾ x 10. We also stock pre-primed CVG clapboards in ½ x 6. For tips on installing cedar siding, see the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association web site.

Tongue & Groove

We stock a knotty grade of cedar tongue & groove siding in the Western Wood Products Association’s WP-4 pattern.

Cedar Boards

We stock 1 x 8 and 1 x 12 cedar boards in "D and Better Clear" grade. This material is surfaced one side and two edges "S1S2E" leaving one side "rough sawn." We also stock surfaced four sides "S4S" 4 x 4’s.

Pine Siding

We stock Premium Eastern White Pine siding, rough sawn "S1S2E" in 1 x 12 and rough sawn shiplap pattern in 1 x 8 and 1 x 12. When stained, this material makes an excellent and economical vertical siding for barns and other outbuildings. Visit the Northeast Lumber Manufacturers' Association for more information on Eastern White Pine.
